Better Off Birding---5/6/26

$45.00

Wednesday, May 6, 8 am - 12 pm

Walking Tour = Easy

Guide: Norm Lewis

Join expert birding guide, Norm Lewis, for a springtime day adventure. In May, the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies runs a bird banding station at the Audubon Center, located just to the southwest of Chatfield State Park. After taking a look around the Audubon grounds we will join the banding crew for terrific close looks at the birds they capture in their nets. Following our experience with the banders we will make the short trip to the Waterton Canyon trailhead, which is also the beginning of the Colorado Trail. We will follow the trail up the canyon, along the South Platte River, passing through a variety of habitats that should yield a good number of bird species. Possibilities include lazuli bunting, the spotted towhee, Bullock’s oriole, yellow-breasted chat, gray catbird, yellow warbler, warbling vireo, western flycatcher and many other songbirds. With a little luck we might see a bald or golden eagle riding the updrafts from the canyon! There is also a herd of bighorn sheep that call the canyon home, and they are occasionally encountered along the trail. We’ll be better off birding to experience the sights and sounds of spring!

Starts at the Denver Audubon Kingery Nature Center. Includes guide interpretation.
